A Welcomed Interruption

Beige Classic Feminine Beauty Website.png

My leisurely, neighborhood walk halted when I noticed a baby bird on the street. This weary, weak eyed creature was very much alive. It wobbled on the pavement miles below its treetop nest. Patchy feathered wings were ill-equipped to fly, and it’s yellow beak clapped open for food.

I felt a Good Samaritan urge to rescue the bird from road dangers, to feed and care for it. Often my eating disorder tells me I’m wrong to treat myself with this same compassion. Those struggling with an eating disorder know this feeling all to well.

Fortunately, we do not have to suffer alone. Bring Your Brokenness offers free, in-person and virtual support groups. It’s more than a group; it’s a community. A nest-like safe space where those wrestling with eating disorders can come and hear a positive voice say, “Yes, you’re worthy of nourishment, love, and compassion.”

Many of us enter group weary, weak eyed and in need of rescue. Amie Shields is more than our group leader. She’s a mentor, confidant, and friend. She is the Good Samaritan who sees eating disorder dangers, picks us up, and puts us on safe ground.

I rarely miss virtual group. It’s a vital part of my recovery. From group, I’ve acquired friendships, accountability, a deeper understanding of God’s love, and am more equipped to fight the eating disorder.

Moving the bird, I thanked God for the walking interruption. Matthew 11:28 came to mind as I placed my feathered friend on safe ground.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

In God we can have peace, regardless of our circumstances. By resting in the branches of God’s love and truths and leaning on a positive support system, full recovery is possible for all!
